As a mechanical engineer in the oil and gas industry, I believe it is critical to clarify the differences between quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA). These two terms are frequently used interchangeably, but they refer to different aspects of ensuring the reliability, safety, and compliance of mechanical systems in this complex industry. In this post, I hope to explain the differences between QC and QA using widely accepted international industrial best practises and norms.

Outline

quality assurance includes identifying and mitigating potential risks associated with mechanical systems, such as failure modes and potential hazards. Mechanical engineers contribute to the development of robust designs and maintenance strategies that improve equipment reliability, safety, and operability by using advanced engineering analysis techniques such as reliability-centered maintenance (RCM), failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA), and hazard and operability studies (HAZOP).
