Production management is the process of planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the activities involved in the production of goods and services. It involves decisions such as what to produce, how to produce, where to produce, when to produce, and how much to produce.
Material requirements planning (MRP) is a system of inventory management that calculates the quantity and timing of materials needed to meet the production schedule. It uses information such as the bill of materials, the master production schedule, and the inventory status to generate purchase orders and work orders. MRP helps to reduce inventory costs, improve customer service, and optimize production efficiency.
The Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) program is a highly recognized certification in the field of production management and material requirements planning. Offered by the Association for Supply Chain Management (ASCM), the CPIM certification is considered a standard of professional competence in areas such as materials management, master scheduling, forecasting, production planning, and how these apply across the extended supply chain1.
Here’s what the CPIM program typically includes:
- CPIM Part 1: Basics of Supply Chain Management.
- CPIM Part 2: This part is divided into several modules:
- Strategic Management of Resources (SMR)
- Master Planning of Resources (MPR)
- Detailed Scheduling and Planning (DSP)
- Execution and Control of Operations (ECO)
The program is designed for professionals who work with ERP systems, manufacturing systems and technologies, planning at various levels, master production scheduling, materials requirement planning (MRP), and other related functions1.
