The course is split into four sections.

1. An Introduction to Abrasive Wheels

Abrasive wheels are powered wheels, cylinders, belts, or points made from, or coated with, abrasive particles.   They are designed to grind hard materials such as metal, stone and wood.

No matter which type of abrasive wheel you use, two things should always be considered – they are fast-moving, and they can be very dangerous.

The most common injuries include serious friction burns, crushed fingers, and loss of eyesight.  Hand-arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) can also be caused.  This section covers how the risk of injury and HAVS can be prevented.

This section also covers the laws and legislation which protect people using abrasive wheels at work.  These are the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) and the Health and Safety at Work Act.

This section also covers the employers responsibilities to include risk assessments, ensuring every abrasive wheel has a guard that is rigid, the right size, and securely anchored to the machine frame, Hot Work Permits and to provide the correct PPE such as properly fitted eye protection, such as safety glasses, goggles, or a face shield, the correct grade of respiratory protection and flame-resistant clothing.  Employees also have responsibilities to follow the safety procedures set by their employer and to ensure they are kitted out with the correct PPE provided.

2. The Types of Abrasive Wheels

There are many different types of abrasive wheel and sometimes it can be hard to know which type of wheel you have just by looking at it.  This section explains the British Standard System for marking and identifying abrasive wheels, what the markings mean and the information that must be provided with them such as supplier, traceable manufacturer number, the dimensions of the wheel, a specification mark describing the characteristics of the wheel, operation speed, restrictions on use, expiry date, declaration of conformity and mounting information.

3. Choosing the Right Wheel

This section covers the different shapes of abrasive wheels and their uses, the different abrasive materials and their uses and the different particle sizes and their uses and the roles of bonding and grading.

4. Wheel Safety and Maintenance

This section sets out what to do before using an abrasive wheel, how to mount a wheel safely and the role of flanges and blotters.

It also explains the importance of setting the correct speed and how to work safely with grinding fluids.

Also included in this section is the importance of keeping the wheel and grinding machine well maintained and in good condition to include a maintenance plan, checking the machine bearings and truing, dressing and balancing.

The course concludes with a section on handling and storing abrasive wheels safely.

Conclusion

On completion of your online Abrasive Wheels safety training, you should have a good idea about how to stay safe when setting up, storing, handling, and using abrasive wheels; and you should know what could go wrong if you don’t follow the correct procedures and safety advice.

The course is interspersed throughout with interactive questions and finishes with a test.

This online training course was designed for employees who handle, operate, and maintain abrasive wheels in the workplace.

Covering the dangers, legal responsibilities, and inspections of abrasive wheels, this course aims to leave the user confident in their day-to-day duties working towards compliance with the PUWER regulations.
